The ACL match against Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande led by former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro ended in a scoreless draw.

Yoon Jong-Hwan chose different players from the last game in the starting lineup. Before the game started, I guessed that his intention was not to rest some players but to make a strategic choice to take on a strong team with some tremendously good players. Placing Yang and Yamamura, rather than Sugimoto and Kakitani, in forward might mean they would put more emphasis on strength. But according to Yoon’s post-match comments published on Nikkan Sports, he actually intended to give a rest ahead of the league opening.

Cerezo had a tough time in the first half as they had little chance even to make a shot while Guangzhou had a few scoring chances in part because of Cerezo’s careless mistakes. Guangzhou’s performance in the first half was good enough to make me feel they are strong as a team. Meanwhile, Cerezo players looked somewhat awkward in the first half, had a difficulty in keeping the ball and when facing the opponent players. As the game went on, Guangzhou’s performance became less impressive while more chances came for Cerezo, but the referee blew a whistle before Cerezo put the ball into the net.
