Cerezo Osaka again failed to win yesterday as the ACL match against Buriram United ended in a 2-2 draw.

We can “take this result positively,” as Kenyu Sugimoto told the press after the game, because they got at least a point and still have a chance to go through the group stage. But of course this is far from satisfiable. Both goals they were conceded yesterday were from corner kick, again. Last year they had an advantage in corner kick and often scored goals from it, for example with header by Matej Jonjic, but this year it seems things are turned around. The team clearly need an improvement, as Matej Jonjic pointed out after the game.

Cerezo possessed the ball for 64.2% of the game, the number of their shots was 2 times more than Buriram’s according to the official stats, but these data don’t exactly reflect how the game developed. Cerezo clearly had a difficulty in opening up the opponents’ tight defense. They made 14 shots in 90 minutes but just 3 of them were on target, meaning they didn’t have many real chances seriously threatening Buriram defense.

Yoichiro Kakitani was absent yesterday due to a seemingly minor injury and Yang Dong-Hyun replaced him. Overall, his performance and combination with other players weren’t quite well, but he successfully scored his first goal for Cerezo Osaka with a perfect header from a perfect cross delivered by Yusuke Maruhashi. That was a good thing happened yesterday.
